Become a helicopter flight instructor: Your FI(H) training at Heli-Flug

Are you an experienced helicopter pilot and would like to pass on your knowledge and passion for flying? The FI(H) flight instructor licence, which you can acquire at Heli-Flug, is your chance to take the next step in your flying career as a professional flight instructor.

Prerequisites: The starting point of your teaching career

For the FI(H) licence, you must fulfil the following requirements, among others, before you can start your further training as a flight instructor with us:
  • Minimum age 18 years
  • Medical certificate (medical) class 1
  • A valid PPL(H) or CPL(H) licence
  • Total flying experience 250 hours, of which 100 hours as pilot in command as holder of a CPL(H) or 200 hours as holder of a PPL (H) licence
  • 10 hours of simulated instrument flight
  • 20 hours cross-country flight
  • Radiotelephony licence BZF I (can be obtained during the course)
  • Proof of theoretical knowledge of a commercial pilot (can be acquired during the course)

Your path to becoming a helicopter flight instructor

In our FI(H) training we combine theory and practice to optimally prepare you for your role as a flight instructor.

Theoretical training: Imparting sound knowledge

In the theoretical part, you will learn everything you need to know about applied teaching methodology, curriculum design and evaluation of student performance. You will learn how to pass on your aeronautical knowledge to your helicopter flight students in an understandable way and also what bureaucratic tasks you will face in training administration.

According to the new regulations (EASA Part-FCL), the theoretical training comprises at least 125 hours. The theoretical examination then takes place at the Federal Aviation Office in Braunschweig.

Practical training: Flying with teaching assignment

In the practical phase, you will gain experience in the cockpit, learning how to demonstrate and monitor flight manoeuvres. You will practise how to communicate with your student or other air traffic participants and when/how to intervene. You will practise how to impart your knowledge to the student pilot in various flight situations or after the training flight.

The practical training to become a helicopter flight instructor comprises at least 30 flying hours. The practical examination is conducted by a recognised FIE(H) examiner.

Your future as a helicopter flight instructor

The FI(H) authorisation opens up completely new career opportunities for you. After completing your flight instructor training, you will be able to teach at an EASA flight school in the future. You can pass on your expertise, train new pilots and thus make a valuable contribution to safety and quality in aviation. Your flight instructor licence for helicopters FI(H) is initially valid for three years and must then be extended.
