Want to become a helicopter pilot? Your PPL(H) training is waiting!
Piloting a helicopter yourself is a truly indescribable experience and the best hobby in the world - at least if you ask us. At Heli-Flug's flight school, you have the opportunity to obtain a private pilot's licence for helicopters - known as a PPL(H). This training is aimed at beginners, known as pedestrians, with no previous experience of helicopter flying. This is where it all starts - regardless of whether you want to fly as a hobby or lay the foundations for a professional pilot's licence.
Requirements for obtaining the PPL(H)
As we offer modular training, you can start your training at any time.
As a prospective helicopter pilot, however, you must fulfil a few requirements. These include
- Minimum age: 16 years at the start of training and 17 years when obtaining a licence
- Class 2 medical certificate - we will be happy to provide you with suitable addresses of aviation physicians in your area
- Proof of a valid background check (ZÜP) according to § 7 LuftSiG - we will of course support you with the application
- Radiotelephony certificate BZF II - this aeronautical radio certificate can also be obtained as part of the training programme
Theoretical training PPL(H)
The theory part can be booked as a distance learning course or face-to-face instruction. Heli-Flug even offers the option of one-to-one tuition. The theory training comprises at least 100 hours of instruction in the subjects or subject areas:
- Air law
- Navigation
- General aircraft knowledge
- Flight performance and flight planning
- Meteorology
- Aerodynamics
- Flight operations procedures
- Human performance
- Radiotelephony in German if applicable (BZF II)
You then take the written theory test at the responsible state aviation authority, e.g. the Luftamt Nordbayern in Nuremberg.
Practical training PPL(H)
For practical training, you sit directly in the pilot's seat right from the start, while your flight instructor sits next to you. He or she will accompany you every step of the way and can, of course, intervene at any time thanks to dual controls. Until you are ready for your first solo flight. Further solo flying lessons will then follow.
The content of the practical training includes, for example
- The basics of helicopter flying: learning the basic controls, instruments and manoeuvres
- Exercises on various take-off and landing techniques
- Performing various flight manoeuvres such as hovering, turning, climbing and descending
- Practical exercises for flight navigation and route planning
- Training in emergency procedures and dealing with unexpected situations
- Planning and execution of cross-country flights to expand flight experience
At least 45 flying hours - including 10 hours of supervised solo flying - must be demonstrated. A recognised FE(H) examiner will then conduct the practical examination as part of an examination flight as soon as you and your examiner are sure that all the necessary skills are 100% in place.
Good to know: Recognition of previous knowledge
Do you already have another pilot licence, e.g. for aircraft? Talk to us! The scope and duration of helicopter training can often be significantly reduced on request thanks to overlapping prior knowledge. In the theoretical part, it is usually sufficient to refresh what you have already learnt, supplemented by helicopter-specific topics. You may also be credited with some practical flying hours.
Take the wheel: PPL(H) course at Heli-Flug
You probably still have a lot of questions. We will be happy to take time for you and explain the requirements and the exact procedure for helicopter training in a non-binding, personal discussion. Of course, we can also provide you with initial information on the costs of training.
You may also want to start with just one Taster flight lesson and test everything out? This is of course also possible at Heli-Flug! We look forward to seeing you.
